Questions about Hazardous Exposures

From time to time CiPI gets requests from people who are worried about environmental or medical hazards to which they have been exposed. They may wonder if an existing medical condition was caused by an exposure, or they may worry about future risk. For example, a woman with a thyroid disorder recently asked about a medical procedure involving radioiodine that her mother was given right before her birth. We were able to provide her with information from the scientific literature about the medical procedure, and we are currently trying to estimate her radiation dose.

Although CiPI cannot answer all such requests, we do research those that seem most likely to affect many people. Thus, we may already have learned something useful about a problem that concerns you. Or we may decide to do some new research for you -- and make it available to whoever else contacts us. So please contact us if you indeed have a serious concern. We do not pretend to have "all the answers," but we will pass on what information we have identified.

Also, if you live near a facility that frightens you, we may be able to provide information concerning what is known about past or current risks from such facilities.

Finally, if you are an atomic veteran who needs assistance in proving a claim, we might be able to assist you. (Please see excerpts from a letter from Dr. Beyea to the Department of Veterans Affairs).
